Top Ten Tips: Make Netflix Perform Better In Raspberry Pi

Today I’m going to show you how to make your Netflix run better on your Pi 3 thru a quick series of tips, which will surely increase the performance of your Raspberry Pi, and also make your Netflix marathons overally better.

Grab your own Raspberry Pi 3 Kit here: http://amzn.to/2m0SW8r

This entry is a little bit diferent than usual because you’re not going to see a series of enumerated steps on what to do, instead, these are just recomendation or tips that you can follow to improve not only your Raspberry Pi’s perfomance while browsing Netflix, but also to make your videos smoother or even not seeing that horrible “Buffering” again.

If you haven’t installed Netflix on your Raspberry Pi and you want to do it now, which you should, you can click here to see a tutorial on how to do that.

So, let’s get on with the tips.

Tip #1

You don’t need a Raspberry Pi 3 to run Netflix, even when is the recommended choice, you can also use a Raspberry Pi 2, but due to the lesser capacity of the RPi 2, you will need to overclock it so you can watch your shows in the smoothest way possible.

Tip #2

Is your video choppy or just not smooth enough? Try allocating more GPU memory to your Raspberry Pi, that will surely give it the small bit it needs to play smoothly. The reccomended setting here is to up your GPU memory to 128MB or 256MB.

Tip #3

Remember that the Raspberry Pi 3 requires a 2.5amp power supply to properly function, you can know that your power supply is not enough if a small lightning bold icon appears on the top right corner, if that’s the case, you can grab an adequate power supply from here.

Tip #4

This one may seem a little bit straight forward, but if you are experiencing problems in your connection, your videos take a lot to start or you just feel that the connection speed is slow, try switching to a wired connection.

Tip #5

So, you’ve tweaked your settings and increased the GPU memory but your video still seems choppy? Try lowering the resolution from 1080p (Full HD) to 720p (HD), it may not seem like much, but it will probably take some load out of your Pi’s back.

Tip #6

If you have installed extensions or addons to Chromium, they may be causing some slowdowns in the recompiled version of Chromium that we use to watch Netflix, try disabling them, and if it doesn’t works, you should try uninstalling those extensions.

Tip #7

Do you want to go fullscreen? You can go fullscreen. All you need to do is press “F11” on the keyboard and Voila! your video is now fullscreen.

Tip #8

You have an Hulu account and you can use it on your Raspberry Pi too? All you need to do is go into the Netflix shortcut, open it and then go to Hulu’s URL and you’re done, you can now also watch Hulu on your Raspberry Pi.

Tip #9

Have you waited all the month long for the Netflix release of your favorite show or movie just to find out that it isn’t available on your country? Are you from USA and wanna watch Rick & Morty on Netflix? Install a VPN manager such as OpenVPN, which will allow you to connect to your favorite VPN provider (if you don’t have one yet, you can get it here). Sometimes, even with a VPN, you won’t be able to bypass the security filter, so, if that happens, all you need to do is change to a less used network, such as “Altanta” or “Houston”.

Tip #10

Are you not a fan of installing “.deb” files because whatever reason you may have? Well, you are lucky, because now you can build your own Chromium, “How?” You may ask, well, all you need to do is download the “build-deb.sh” file from here and you are good to go, everything will be compiled for you, but you can still check the files and take a peek whenever you feel like.
